5 Characterisics Of Our Curriculum

1. Experiential
Students do something rather than simply read about it.

2. Investigative
They frequently start with a question: What happens? Why does this happen? What would happen if…?

3. Interdisciplinary
They don't put knowledge into isolated boxes. Science can become history, math can become entrepreneurship, and ecology can become health.

4. Place-based and real-world
Students investigate the world immediately around them - whether that's their own bodies, food, a local ecosystem, or a community problem.

5. Systems-focused
The deeper question underneath our teaching is often: “How are these things connected?”

About me

I’m Deanna, educator and founder behind WildWise Collaborative. With more than 25 years of experience teaching children in classrooms and beyond, I believe the best learning happens when kids are curious, engaged, and connected to the world around them. WildWise Collaborative brings together my background in biology, teaching, and instructional design to create hands-on, nature-based learning experiences that help children explore real-world science, ask meaningful questions, and see the connections between what they learn and the world they live in.

Review

I have really enjoyed exploring WildWise Collaborative and Deanna Fahey's work. What has struck me most is the thinking behind the resources. There is a genuine spirit of inquiry throughout them. Learners aren't simply presented with information to remember. They are encouraged to wonder, investigate, make connections, work with evidence, solve problems, and think for themselves.
 
I first explored Destination Unknown: Operation Blind Terrain, a geology investigation that invites learners to follow clues and use evidence to figure out where they have been "deployed." More recently, I had the opportunity to explore the full Space Science unit, and I was impressed by how much is woven into the experience - science, maths, investigation, modelling, critical thinking, creativity, communication, and real-world problem solving.
 
I also really appreciate Deanna's interdisciplinary and nature-based inquiry approach. Her use of different "lenses" to help learners connect ideas rather than experience subjects as isolated facts particularly resonates with me. WildWise feels like it has been created by someone with a genuinely curious and inquiring mind who understands that learning is richer when children are given opportunities to explore, question, connect, and discover. I'm very glad I found WildWise Collaborative and look forward to seeing where Deanna takes it next.
